PERSONALITY:

Uenoyama led a rather normal life until the second year of high school. He grew up with his sister Yayoi and his father gifted him his guitar in middle school. Fascinated by music and the sounds it can make, he spent years practicing and listening to all sorts of music to educate himself, despite Yayoi’s teasing that he "sucks". All the practice had paid off, however, and he eventually became a part of a band. He became fairly popular among the local music performers as he published several CDs by himself. Because of this, Uenoyama is perceived as very cool but also arrogant.

However, due to a lot of clashing among the members (and Uenoyama not really helping with his own fiery temper), he left his first band. He was later recruited by Haruki Nakayama, an older bass guitarist, and together with Akihiko Kaji, they formed a band called “The Seasons”. After playing with them for some time, Uenoyama found himself fitting in better than he thought he would, as everyone was doing what they liked because of their different interests. Because of that, he found the band to be perfect for him. He became the lead guitarist of the band, and is usually the one that composes the pieces, after which his bandmates add on with their instruments.

However, meeting a boy named Mafuyu in his second year of high school sent his world spiraling out of control. At first, he thought nothing of it, as the guy just managed to make his rather short temper flare up all the time. He's easily irritable when people are too indecisive, taking a long time to respond to the simplest of questions or just plain don't make any sense.

Uenoyama is usually easy-going and nice to talk to, especially about music. He does his best to be as tolerant as he can, but sometimes his patience just snaps and he shouts his frustrations out. It is the first thing we see of him in the series, as he becomes annoyed with Mafuyu's silence. But despite the rage and annoyance, Uenoyama proceeds to fix Mafuyu's broken guitar strings, reprimanding him to take better care of it and trying to encourage him, saying that a couple of snapped strings aren’t the end of the world. However, he's blissfully unaware of how their simple meeting affected Mafuyu. Uenoyama, in return, is struck to his core when he hears Mafuyu sing for the first time, and in the same fashion as Mafuyu nagged him to teach him the guitar, he follows after Mafuyu to have him join the band as a vocalist.

When it comes to music, Uenoyama becomes a version of himself that Kaji calls “Ue-sama” (Lord Ue). He doesn’t hold back on his punches and criticizes everyone and anyone that's out of sync or falling behind. Even after he and Mafuyu started dating, he doesn’t hold back and very loudly lectures him that his guitar is way off or that he keeps missing notes. He is somewhat of a perfectionist and is ready to practice as long as necessary to achieve what he has in mind. And when he gets into composing something and his inspiration is strong, he can go on for hours playing, not eating and missing out on sleep.

Despite his cranky and bossy exterior, he is known to be a very caring and forgiving person, always willing to help. He's shown to be exceptionally gentle and attentive around Mafuyu, from the moment he met him. He offers to repair his guitar strings, to tune it; he instructs Mafuyu and teaches him his first guitar chords (despite stubbornly grumping how he doesn’t know to teach), and becomes worried when he becomes sick after their first performance together.

He's not able to hold a grudge; he does have a “dislike” for Hiiragi (“Because they're similar,” everyone said), as the guy requested him to finish Yuki's (Mafuyu's dead ex-boyfriend and Hiiragi's good friend's) song. But he respects him and his talent and hard work.

When there is something troubling him, Uenoyama tends to clamp down and panic. Sometimes that panic is expressed through shouting moments after, or he's just completely gone in his stupor of blankly staring and trying to process things. It is usually due to his inexperience with such situations, and there are a few very distinct instances when this happens: a realization that there's a feeling of jealousy welling up in him when Mafuyu talks about his song, during the talk with Kaji about having a crush and thinking it was weird, and when Mafuyu confesses to him (that was a total shut down). Not having experienced such things before, Uenoyama's left to try and gather himself or make some sense out of the situation with feelings rushing through him.

Uenoyama's shown to have a cordial relationship with his bandmates, and they often work together in sync without many problems. Haruki is the first person he went to for advice when he and Mafuyu started dating, respectfully accepting all the reprimands and warnings from the bassist. Kaji is something of an idol for Uenoyama, and he’s often seen admiring him. He also helps Uenoyama out in understanding his feelings about Mafuyu; he doesn’t make him feel weird for liking another guy and actually encourages him about it.
